Good job to Kate, Gary, Cory, Jack and Howard
Nitrox has swung into full swing in the recreational arena. Longer bottom times and shorter surface
intervals make it a big hit with recreational divers. Once called VooDoo Gas or Geezer Gas only Tech
Divers were using it. People claim you dont feel as tired after a day of diving with it. Come see for yourself what its all about!

ATTENTION AREA DIVE RESCUE TEAMS

Do you need Public Safety Training?
Diving is a specialized activity taking place in a hazardous environment. That is why even recreational divers require certification to access equipment, air fills and dive sites. That recreational certification (called open water) qualifies divers to dive in reasonably calm, clear conditions at depths not to exceed 60 feet. In the recreational diving industry that certification is frequently referred to as a permit to learn, just as a learner’s permit is issued to a person completing high school drivers education. We do not allow the learning permitee to drive without supervision, much less operate an emergency vehicle in route to an accident or fire scene. Yet many departments feel that open water training qualifies the diver to dive in the hazardous environments encountered by the Public Safety Dive Team.

Many teams have fallen victim to the Rescue Diver Certification farce. Recognizing the need for additional training the administrator seeks out “professional assistance” from the local dive store. The dive store instructor provides all that he is able to provide, a recreational certification as a Rescue Diver. Most recreational training agencies define their Rescue Diver Course as a self and buddy rescue program. This is adequate for helping your buddy who gets in trouble at 45 feet on the coral reef in the Keys, but not much assistance in the Public Safety Environment.

The diving environment qualifies in every area as a HAZMAT site. Add fuels and oils from a submerged vehicle and we have put multiple hazardous chemicals around the diver. Additionally, those chemicals will destroy the divers life support system if they are inadequate for the job. Place the diver inside the vehicle to do a recovery and we have added confined space rescue in a HAZMAT environment to the picture. How many department administrators would take a person off the street with no formal training and place them in that situation above water? Applied to other areas, imagine taking a person off the sidewalk handing them bunker gear and sending them into a burning building or sending a person to do hostage negotiation with only the information found in over the counter magazines. Yet, almost daily departments do just that with department dive team members or even bystanders that happen to dive. Is this an invitation to disaster? Should you ask the members of your department to accept or even volunteer to be a part of this potential disaster?

So how do you select and understand the type of training you are getting?
When contracting the initial training for your dive team you will probably be limited to two sources – sport certification instructors and agencies that specialize in training public safety divers. The other limited but possible resource is technical agency instructors with specialized experience in rescue operations. The advantage to sport instruction is cost and availability. The drawback is an instructional program which generally prohibits the training of professional diving activities or any diving activity outside the traditional recreational limits. The training focuses on avoiding the situations the public safety diver will encounter on 90% of all calls. Additionally the instructor probably lacks any public safety experience.

From a liability perspective, this may place the department in an indefensible position if training is questioned. From a safety perspective we have created an accident waiting for a scene. These factors are addressed by hiring public safety diving instructional specialist with verifiable credentials and experience. The drawback is availability, since local resources frequently don’t exist. That lack of availability will probably increase cost. The department must decide if the increased safety and reduced liability are worth a few extra dollars. That is part of the team’s obligation

Find out about ERDI Public Safety Diver Training Today or call Islanders for Additional Information. ERDI is reconized all over the world. Large Organizations use ERDI including LA COUNTY, FLORIDA TEAMS and International Teams.

Scuba opens an entire world that many never see. Each dive is unique, each experience exciting. While scuba is a wonderful activity for almost everyone, there are a few factors to consider before embarking on the scuba journey:

1. Why do you want to learn to dive?

Learning to dive is an activity that can provide recreation and fun for a lifetime. Before starting, make sure that you are ready to invest the time, effort, and money needed to learn. Once you’re set, jump in with both feet. You’ll be happy you did!

2. Your Age

Diving is a great activity for people of almost every age. In most places, a person must be at least 10 years old to dive, but there is no upper age limit on diving. Diving is a great, gentle activity for anyone old enough to dive! Once you learn the basics of scuba diving, you can continue diving your whole life!

3. Fitness Level

Diving is a relatively low-impact activity, though some level of basic fitness is required. To make sure that you will be able to handle the physical demands of a dive, a water proficiency test is required. Here at Islanders Dive Center, this test includes swimming 200 yards freestyle, or 400 yards with mask, fins, and snorkel, and treading water for 10 minutes. If you aren’t a very strong swimmer, don’t worry, you can complete the laps at your own pace, doing any stroke you are able, including backstroke!

4. Where you plan to dive

There are so many beautiful and exciting places to dive all over the world! Learning to dive will open up an array of new vacation possibilities. It is also good to make sure there are places to dive close to home, so you can enjoy diving anytime you want!

5. Your physical health

Diving is a great sport for almost everyone, but anyone with conditions affecting the heart, lungs or ears should get doctor’s approval before diving. You will have to fill out a completely confidential medical questionnaire before starting scuba to make sure that you don’t have any underlying conditions that could increase your risk.

6. Family and friends

Diving is much more enjoyable, and much safer in groups of at least two people. Do any of your family or friends already dive? Perhaps one of them would want to get certified with you. Ask your friends and relatives to see if they are interested!

Jacques Cousteau, a French seaman, is credited with creating the first Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA), which he called the Aqualung, in 1943. Though Cousteau is given credit for the invention, Leonardo da Vinci had drawn up plans for a leather scuba suit about 300 years earlier.

Ever wonder why everything appears blue in underwater pictures and movies? The water above divers filters all the red and yellow light, making everything appear to have a blue hue. Diving with an artificial light source will allow you to see true color under water.

If you decide you really like to dive, it is possible to get married underwater!

Humans kill close to 100 million sharks per year, while the number of shark attacks of humans resulting in death is only 8-12 per year.

Don’t expect to be able to tell where sounds come from underwater. Sound travels four times faster under water than in air, so we are unable to hear the minute variations in the sounds in each ear and determine the source.

The world record for longest dive is 69 days and 19 minutes and is held by Richard Presley. He completed this dive in 1992 in an deep-water module at Key Largo, Florida.

Certain scuba courses can be counted as college credit at some schools. Talk to your scuba instructor and academic adviser to see if this is a possibility for you.

In World War II, Navy frogmen wore an “oxygen re-breather,” which they called a “SCUBA” to attack enemy vessels underwater. The military advantage of an oxygen re-breather is that, because it is a re-circulating system, there are no tell-tale bubbles at the surface, and duration of the dive is greatly increased.

Over 90% of all volcanic activity happens in the ocean! Scientist estimate that up to 80% of all life on earth is found under the ocean surface.

The ocean contains 99% of all living space on the planet, and only 10% of that has been explored by humans.

85% of the area and 90% of the volume constitute the dark, cold environment we call the deep sea. The average depth of the ocean is 3,795 m. The average height of the land is 840 m.

Earth’s longest mountain range, the Mid-Ocean Ridge, is underwater, and is four times as long as the Rockies, Andes and Himalayas combined.

The largest living organism on earth is Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. It has a larger surface area than all of England!

The Blue Whale is the largest known animal on the planet, with a heart the size of a small car.

Most “Sea Serpent” sightings are just sightings of the massive Oarfish, the longest bony fish in the world, growing up to 45 feet and having a horse like face.

Fish can change sex during their lives, and some even have both male and female sex organs.

Intrigued? Come explore the ocean with us to see for yourself!
